The reigning Big 9 champions, the Owatonna Huskies, came into Northfield Thursday night and proved why they are still favorites to win the conference and return to the state tournament. The Huskies defeated the Raiders 88-53 and dropped Northfield to 5-4 on the season and 3-2 in the Big 9. Owatonna improved to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
Northfield Boys Basketball was able to take the win against Albert Lea, 90-84. Albert Lea came out swinging in the aggressive matchup. The Tigers had Northfield second guessing if they could pull off the triumph, but the Raiders were able to adapt and overcome with senior Soren Richardson and junior Austin Koep leading the way.
Northfield began its march toward a second consecutive conference title in earnest Tuesday with a 4-1 win over rival Owatonna at Northfield Ice Arena.
The Northfield Raiders traveled to Buffalo on Saturday, January 8th to wrestle in the Gerry Bakke Memorial Invite and tied for sixth place. Northfield brought 11 varsity and nine junior varsity boys along with one female wrestler.
Orono forced Northfield to play catchup all afternoon Saturday at Northfield Ice Arena and the Raiders never caught up in a 6-5 overtime loss that snapped a four-game winning streak.
Northfield got the kind of win it has sought by dispatching Delano, ranked No. 13 in Class A by Let’s Play Hockey, in a 5-3 victory at Northfield Ice Arena in a game that had moments of adversity.
Coming off a strong performance at Rumble On The Red, the largest high school sanctioned wrestling tournament in the United States, the Raiders hosted their first home meet of the year against Mankato East. Northfield escaped with a narrow 36-34 victory backed by pins from Jack Pribyl and Owen Murphy. However, the star of the show was sophomore Ryan Kuyper, who upset the number seven ranked 195lbs wrestler in the state at AA, Brian Tilges, by decision 8-6.
