The Northfield Raiders Girl’s Track and Field team competed in the section 1AAA meet on Thursday, June 1st, and Saturday, June 3rd, and were able to qualify one individual for the state meet. Freshman Amber Mahal leaped 5′ 2″ to win the high jump event and will compete on Thursday, June 8th in St. Michael-Albertville. “This is a big accomplishment for the 9th grader, setting a two-inch personal best in the event and surprising the competition,” said girl’s head coach Janet Smith about Mahal’s performance.

Section Change for Next Year

Next year, like many sports in Northfield, the Girl’s Track and Field team will be moving down to Section 1AA. For the past few seasons, Northfield has been the smallest school in section 1AAA and has seen the difference when looking at other section results from around the state. “The move to AA next year looks very promising for our girls and if you compare their finishes this year to our next year’s competition, we will be able to really stack up well,” said Smith. “[We will be able to] send many more athletes to the state competition, all across the event groups!” The change will go into effect at the beginning of next season.

What’s Next for This Season?
