Girls Soccer Lace For A Cure

It was a sea of pink in the Northfield Memorial Field stands as the Gils Soccer Team hosted their 12th annual Lace For A Cure Game. The auction table was full, money was raised for breast cancer research and as the coaches talk about in their interviews posted below, it’s great to see kids work as a team for a great cause.

Winona took advantage of Northfield miscues Tuesday night at Memorial Field to walk away with a 3-1 at Northfield High School.

The Winhawks (6-5-1, 4-3 Big 9) picked up their third straight win behind two second-half goals from sophomore Ali Quimby who came off the bench to make an impact shortly after she entered the game. Quimby scored her first goal in the 48th minute when a corner kick found its way in front of her and she put it in the back of the net from the far post to give Winona a 1-0 lead.

In the 56th minute, the Winhawks pulled ahead 2-0 on a Northfield own goal. A ball played back to goalkeeper Graycie Freyberg from Allanah Clarey went awry and trickled into the Raiders’ goal.

Northfield (2-10, 2-6 Big 9)  rallied and made it a 2-1 game in the 68th minute when Oliva Rasmussen took a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box and sent a shot toward the far post that found the back of the net.

The goal reinvigorated the Raiders but Quimby’s second goal of the game snuffed out any chance of an equalizer for Northfield. Winona, which has won six of its last seven games, sent a ball into the 6-yard box and after a scramble, Quimby got a foot on the ball to net her second goal of the game for a 3-1 advantage.

The defeat snapped a two-game winning streak for the Raiders after they defeated Austin 5-0 Sept. 20 in Austin and beat Albert Lea 2-1 Sept. 22 in Albert Lea.

Northfield will face Rochester Mayo (2-5-3, 2-3-2 Big 9) Thursday in Rochester.
