Girls soccer: Northfield extends hot streak

By Nick Gerhardt

Northfield continued its hot streak Thursday by picking a 3-1 win over Albert Lea at Memorial Field in Northfield on Senior Night.

The Raiders (5-6, 3-3 Big 9) grabbed their second consecutive win behind two first-half goals from sophomore forward Alaia Douah and a second-half goal from Oliva Rasmussen. Northfield has won four of its last six games after posting a 2-0 victory over Red Wing Tuesday in Red Wing.

Douah got the Raiders on the scoreboard in the 17th minute after knocking in a loose fall that came into the goal box from a corner kick from senior defender Kate Hubers.

Hubers and Douah connected again in the first half with a minute to play on another corner kick. This time Douah collected Hubers’ corner kick service for a one-time shot to make it 2-0.

The Tigers (2-6, 1-5 Big 9) drew the game to 2-1 in the 50th minute after ninth-grader Haley Austinson got a shot through a scrum in front of the Northfield goal.

Rasmussen helped put the game out of reach with a free kick goal in the 59th minute. Rasmussen found the upper left corner of the net on a free kick from about 18 yards out to give Northfield a 3-1 lead. It marked Rasmussen’s third goal of the season to put her in a tie for the team lead with ninth-grader Danika Bulfer and senior Shania Gjerdingen.

The Raiders move on to face Austin (0-10, 0-6 Big 9) Tuesday in Austin as they try to move to .500 on the season.
