Northfield started the New Year with a well-earned 3-1 win over the Crookston Pirates at the Northfield Ice Arena on Friday, January 5. Their impressive 16-0 (7-0, Big Nine) record means they are the only undefeated team in the State.
The first period ended 1-0, with Northfield’s Ayla Puppe capitalizing on a quick rush during the power play for her 38th season goal. Despite having no points on the scoreboard in the 1st period, the Crookston Pirates matched the Raiders shot for shot.
The Raiders entered the second period with a 1-0 lead; however, this did not dampen the Pirate’s spirit. Crookston had two more opportunities on the power play, but Northfield’s goaltender, Macy Mueller, stood strong with the help of Northfield’s excellent penalty kill crew. Senior Captain Grace McCoshen scored Northfield’s second goal from the point, bringing the score to 2-0.
At the beginning of the third period, Northfield added to their lead with a second goal from McCoshen, bringing the score to 3-0. Crookston then drew three penalties, giving them a final chance to keep the game going.
Right after Northfield finished defending their penalty, Crookston’s 8th grade captain, Jocelyn Field, scored off a backhand to bring the score to 3-1. Despite giving up a goal, Northfield continued to play lockdown defense even after Crookston pulled the goalie in a last-minute attempt.
The Raider girls’ hockey team looks to keep their streak going as they play Benilde St. Margaret at home on Tuesday, January 9th.
