Girls Lacrosse; Second-half surge vaults Owatonna past Northfield

By Nick Gerhardt

Northfield couldn’t carry over its offensive explosion from last week to Monday’s matchup with Owatonna as the Huskies defeated the Raiders 14-3 at Memorial Field in Northfield.

Northfield (2-9, 2-7 Big 9) saw conference-leading Owatonna (7-1, 7-0 Big 9) go on a 7-0 run in the second half to build a 10-goal lead with 10 minutes left in the game. Owatonna junior Madison McGinn scored three of her four goals in the second half while senior Annika Moran finished with a team-high five goals, three of which came in the first half.

Eighth-grader Gwen Tapper scored for Northfield in the first half to stop a Huskies 3-0 run to start the game.

Raiders sophomore Kellie O’Meara made it a 5-2 game with a goal just 2 minutes, 20 seconds into the second half before Owatonna went on its run. Sophomore Lola McCarty scored with 4:13 left in the game that brought it to a 12-3 game before Owatonna’s Moran and McGinn each scored once more in the final minutes.

The Raiders entered the game on the heels of a 16-10 loss Thursday to Rochester Mayo, the second-most goals they’ve scored in a game this season. The Huskies beat Northfield 15-3 April 27 in Owatonna in the season’s first meeting.

The Raiders close out the regular season with two road games, beginning Thursday against Rochester John Marshall/Lourdes in Rochester. Northfield won the first meeting 11-7 and closes the regular season next Thursday against Lakeville South in Lakeville.
